Experimentation
Regimen
Training for multi-scalar environments.
As a process of improving my work on each of these projects, I have been developing an open source regimen of training. Our environments are multi-scalar:
- Immediate sensation and the process of the body.
- The cognitive apparatus of the brain and the rational processes it instantiates with others.
- The environment of the mind, full of fantasy, misprision and desire.
- The joy and mess of sociality and coordination.
- A technological apparatus that is increasingly effacing the agent/environment distinction.
- The irrational economic environment of production for exchange value.
- Our accidentally-terraformed planet.
- The indifferent universe beyond and beneath.
Progress means sensitisation to and training within each of these environments.
Some of the training is unglamorous and specific. I bet regularly on manifold.markets, for instance, as a way of attuning my predictions about the world to what actually happens — or at least to how the market resolves. Where pundits make simple, uncalibrated predictions and rarely pay for being wrong, a market forces a number and settles the score: one that stands at 59% should resolve yes about 59% of the time. Putting my own money on it is how I keep my intuitions honest against that standard.
